West African Football Academy handed PL leaders Accra Hearts of Oak their biggest defeat yet of the season - a 3-0 drubbing - in their week 23 fixture played at the Red Bull Arena in Sogakope this afternoon, ending the Phobians unbeaten away run this season as well as their winless streak against their guests with a real baptism of fire. It was a performance that left the fancied Phobians bruised, battered and in search of answers.

Highlights - WAFA SC Vs Accra Hearts of Oak

The match which was more important to the Phobians considering their plans of winning the league to end their seven year title drought saw the Academy Boys dominate the entire game with sublime display of scientific football. Hearts of Oak had no clue to the charges of the Academy Boys and had to chase their shadows throughout the game. The defeat will hamper Hearts of Oak chances of winning the league since the point’s margin between the top four clubs is very marginal. This obviously means Hearts will be leapfrogged should Wa All Stars and Aduana Stars win their respective matches tomorrow.

Both clubs started with a 4-3-3 formation but it was the Academy Boys who showed expertise in that regard and made gains as early as the third minute on their favourite Astro turf. Togolese import Komla Agbegniandan displaced Soulama Abdoulaye after a sloppy defensive play from Richard Akrofi and Robin Gnagne for the opener. The goal made Hearts of Oak move out for the equalizer and this created openings at the back. Still unsettled in the game, Hearts committed another defensive blunder in the 11th minute which Charles Boateng took advantage of and slotted in for the second goal of the game .The Academy Boys sealed the win in the 25th minute after a beautiful build up and all that Komla Agbegniandan had to do was to convert to make it three for the Sogakope side.

The onslaughts from the Academy side continued with Soulama in goal for Hearts parrying the balls that came after. WAFA could have harvested more goals but Gideon Waja and Charles Boateng wasted the lots of opportunities that came their way.

Back from recess however, Hearts brought on Vincent Atinga for unimpressive Robin Gnagne to solidify the defence which had leaked all day and the change paid off. WAFA upon seeing the intention of Hearts of Oak possessed the ball throughout with occasional attacks but Hearts held on. Hearts coach - Sergio Traguil - opted for a 4-4-2 to stop the Academy Boys from increasing the tally. He brought on Cosmos Dauda and Oleenu Ashitey to replace Leonard Tawiah and Isaac Mensah respectively. The substitution did not change the complexion of the game. WAFA’s domination continued with substitute Ashimeru shooting from all angles which at one time forced Soulama to pull a double save to deny the Academy Boys from breaking the hearts of the league leaders any further.

Hearts of oak had no option than to chase shadows until the referee whistled for the end of the game.
