President Akufo-Addo made a surprise appearance at the Chalewote Street Art Festival 2018 on Saturday as part of his commitment towards the arts and culture industry.

His appearance, is the maiden for a sitting President.

He was welcomed by the Minister of Tourism and Culture, Hon. Catherine Afeku, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Director of Operations at The Presidency, Mr. Lord Commey and Nii Mantse, Head of AccraDotAlt, the organizers of the event among other high profile dignitaries.

President Akuffo, who was in his usual African wear was taken on a guided tour of the James Fort Prisons where he visited Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s cell, as well as some artistic installations and creative exhibitions which were on display at the fort. He visited the Brazil house and other art exhibition locations.

In an interaction with the media after the tour, the Mayor of Accra stated that the chalewote festival was an event the city considers an opportunity to exhibit its smartness and vibrancy.

He assured that the AMA in collaboration with organizers has provided enough security to ensure public safety, adding that personnel from the police MTTD, and AMA Metro Guards are present to ensure effective traffic coordination.

He reminded city dwellers to exhibit a high sense of commitment to a clean environment, whiles participating in activities at the event. He also urged the organizers to sustain the event.

The Chalewote Street Art Festival started 8 years ago and has served as a platform for creative artists in and outside Ghana to showcase their paintings, sculptures, photographs, films, fashion, mixed media, comedy, culinary arts, music and dance.

The community-based festival takes place in James Town – one of Accra’s most historic communities – and targets exchanges between Ghana-based and international artists creating art together.
