The English Premier League continued this weekend with bottommost Sheffield United's hopes of repeating their midweek giant-killing over Manchester United against City at the Etihad being doused in cold water as they succumbed to a lone goal defeat at the hands of Manchester City, who picked up a club-record 12th successive victory with the win for a three-point advantage at the helm on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, West Brom and Fulham failed to boost their survival hopes as they played to a two-all tie, and Southampton lost by a goal at home to Aston Villa.
Mohammed Salah ended his seven-game goal Premier League drought with a double against West Ham as Liverpool continued their recent rejuvenation with a 3-1 win over the former to move up third on Sunday. Emphatic finishes from Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso gave Thomas Tuchel his first victory as Chelsea head coach against a below-par Burnley, and Leeds United fought back from a goal down for a 3-1 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
And in the last game of the weekend, Brighton secured their first home win of the season - a lone goal victory over Tottenham Spurs - to boost their Premier League survival hopes.

Callum Wilson's second-half goals gave Newcastle a vital first win in nine Premier League games to ease the pressure on Steve Bruce as they beat a flat Everton 2-0 at Goodison Park.
Wilson, who had missed Newcastle's two best chances either side of half-time, scored his 50th Premier League goal with a fabulous, inch-perfect header from Jonjo Shelvey's corner (73), a deserved opener for Bruce's side.
Wilson got his and Newcastle's second in stoppage time, finishing low past Jordan Pickford when one-on-one as Everton were caught high up the pitch looking for a leveller (90+3).
There have been strong calls for Bruce's sacking among Newcastle fans of late, but this was a rare positive performance and lifts Newcastle eight points clear of the drop zone, albeit having played one more game than 18th-placed Fulham.
Crystal Palace 1-0 Wolves
Crystal Palace secured their first Premier League victory in four games as Ebere Eze's fine second-half strike was enough to secure a 1-0 win over Wolves at Selhurst Park.
Following an opening half devoid of clear-cut chances between two sides short of form, the hosts took the lead on the hour-mark as Eze collected Jordan Ayew's pass to flash a fierce shot beyond Rui Patricio.
Wilfried Zaha came close to doubling Palace's lead when his effort struck the crossbar while Willian Jose went closest to salvaging a point for the visitors when Vicente Guaita kept out his close-range header.
The result moves Palace above Wolves into 13th place while Nuno Espirito Santo's men have now gone eight league games without a win, the worst winless run of his tenure.
Manchester City 1-0 Sheffield United
Gabriel Jesus ended a nine-game Premier League goal drought to help Man City to a club-record 12th win a row as they beat Sheffield United 1-0 to extend their lead at the top of the table.
The Brazilian tucked in from close range just nine minutes into the contest after some woeful Sheffield United defending - Jayden Bogle and Ethan Ampadu inexplicably allowed Ferran Torres to squeeze past them in the box to tee up Jesus, who was left unmarked by Chris Basham six yards out - and that proved to be the decisive strike, with the visitors largely keeping their dominant hosts at bay - although it took a superb Aaron Ramsdale stop in the final seconds to deny Jesus a second.
City sit three points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand on their neighbours and are now unbeaten in 19 matches across all competitions.
Sheffield United remain bottom of the table, 10 points from safety, and now face a crucial test against fellow strugglers West Brom at Bramall Lane on Tuesday evening.
West Brom 2-2 Fulham
West Brom and Fulham failed to boost their survival hopes as they played out a 2-2 draw in which new-signing Mbaye Diagne impressed for the Baggies.
In what was being billed as the season's first 'six-pointer' between two teams in relegation trouble, Fulham bossed the first 45 minutes at The Hawthorns but only had a Bobby Decordova-Reid goal to show (10) for their complete domination.
Sam Allardyce unleashed Diagne at the break and he triggered a huge upturn in the hosts' performance level with Kyle Bartley drawing the Baggies level (47). The on-loan Galatasaray striker then grabbed an assist by setting up Matheus Pereira to put West Brom in front (66).
Fulham did not have a shot in the second half until the 75th minute as their performance flattened out, but substitute Ivan Cavaleiro headed home a vital equaliser for Scott Parker's side. It means Fulham have drawn seven of their last nine Premier League games.
West Brom are now 9 points from safety and Fulham are seven points off Brighton in 17th.
Arsenal 0-0 Manchester United
Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw by an under-strength Arsenal side at the Emirates Stadium as they lost ground to Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
The Gunners, who were without captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Bukayo Saka and Kieran Tierney, started brightly, but United, who lost Scott McTominay early in the match to injury, grew into the game and fashioned the best chance before the break.
Bernd Leno made a smart save to deny Fred, while Marcus Rashford failed to get a shot away when free at the back post as the sides went in all-square at the break.
In the second half, Arsenal, who brought on Martin Odegaard for his debut late on, came out the stronger of the two sides as Alexandre Lacazette's free-kick hit the crossbar before David de Gea made an excellent block to keep out Emile Smith Rowe's strike. Nicolas Pepe sent a curling effort inches wide late on before Edinson Cavani steered arguably the best chance of the game wide in the dying stages.
The point sees Arsenal, who stretch their unbeaten league run to seven games in the 10th spot, while United, who have scored just once in five games against their big-six rivals this season, stay second, but are three points behind leaders Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
Southampton 0-1 Aston Villa
Ross Barkley's first-half header was enough for Aston Villa to win 1-0 at Southampton, who were punished twice by VAR with the smallest of margins.
It was a dramatic start to the St Mary's encounter when Southampton had a huge penalty shout turned down. Stuart Armstrong's shot hit Matty Cash on the arm, but VAR official Mike Dean judged the ball to have hit the Aston Villa defender on the thigh first with the slightest of touches.
Southampton played well in the first half but failed to have a shot on target and were penalised for their blunt attack when Ross Barkley (41) nodded home from a Jack Grealish cross just before half-time.
Both sides had chances in the second half - in which Southampton added two more names to their injury list in Ibrahima Diallo and Theo Walcott - and Saints thought they had snatched a late equaliser, but Danny Ings was flagged for offside.
Aston Villa's valiant defending in the second half helped secure the points, sending them into the ninth spot. Southampton remain in 11th as their recent drop in form continued, and they have now won just one of their last eight Premier League games

Chelsea 2-0 Burnley
Thomas Tuchel registered his first win in charge of Chelsea as goals from Cesar Azpilicueta and the recalled Marcos Alonso helped his side see off Burnley 2-0.
Chelsea captain Azpilicueta, playing under his eighth Blues manager, finished off a fine flowing move five minutes before half-time to open the scoring at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso, making his first start since September after being frozen out under the previous boss Frank Lampard, sealed the victory late on with a fine strike (84).
As a result, Chelsea have moved up to seventh in the Premier League, while Burnley slip to 16th in the table below Newcastle on goals scored.
Leicester City 1-3 Leeds United
Patrick Bamford scored one and made two to give Leeds a 3-1 win at Leicester to prevent the Foxes from moving second in the Premier League.
In a frantic, direct first period, Leicester took the lead through Harvey Barnes strong run and low finish (13) having used James Maddison as a wall, but the visitors levelled almost instantly through Stuart Dallas sweeping finish from Bamford's centre (15) from a classic Leeds counter.
The game settled for much of the second half, before Bamford, who hadn't scored in four Premier League games, found the top corner from an angle with 19 minutes remaining.
Leicester had several clear-cut chances to level, but Bamford selflessly put the ball on a plate for Jack Harrison (84) to wrap up the victory during another sweeping, trademark Leeds counter-attack in another brave and entertaining display from Marcelo Bielsa's side.
Leicester has the fourth spot, two points off second-place Manchester United and five off leaders Manchester City, but having played a game more. Leeds remain 12th, but are just four points off the top six.
West Ham 1-3 Liverpool
Mohamed Salah produced two moments of magic as Liverpool's recovery continued with a 3-1 win at West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Egyptian ended his six-game goal drought in the league by cutting in from the right and curling a trademark shot inside the far post on 57 minutes, after Liverpool had struggled in the final third up to that point.
He then doubled his tally and Liverpool's advantage with a sublime touch and finish to convert a counter-attack 11 minutes later, before Georginio Wijnaldum capped the win five minutes from time, tucking in from close range after neat play from subs Roberto Firmino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Craig Dawson grabbed a late consolation (87), finishing smartly from a corner, but Liverpool - inspired by the brilliant Salah - are now up to third in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
West Ham - who saw their six-game winning streak across all competitions come to an end - are now five points behind the Reds in fifth.
Brighton 1-0 Tottenham
Brighton boosted their survival chances after securing their first home success of the season with a 1-0 victory over a lacklustre Tottenham.
Graham Potter's side were by far the better of the two sides in the first half, but they only had Leandro Trossard's 17th-minute strike to show for their dominance.
Spurs, who handed Gareth Bale just his second Premier League start since his return to the club in place of the injured Harry Kane, struggled for any sort of rhythm and it took them until the 75th minute to fashion their first real chance as Robert Sanchez brilliantly saved substitute Carlos Vinicius' strike.
Brighton spurned a golden opportunity late on through Aaron Connolly to make the game safe, but they weren't punished as Spurs failed to find an equaliser on what was a disappointing night for Jose Mourinho and his side.
Victory sees Brighton move seven points clear of the relegation zone, while the result means Spurs, who have suffered back-to-back defeats in the league, stay sixth.
